5/1/2023 0 Comments War painnt orchestra![]() “They had a passion for something and, you know, sometimes it’s not even about taking the road less traveled it’s about forging your own path.” ![]() “I read old articles, old advertising materials, exhibitions at museums, I even went to her store.” She spoke of Elizabeth and Helena as if they were old friends. “It’s important for me to know these women - to have a glimpse into their lives,” Angelina added as we spent the better part of an hour discussing the mammoth amount of research that informed her War Paint designs. War Paint has the unique quality of being historically-based these were real women and real products. ![]() “So much goes into it, the script, the lighting, the scale of the theater, the architecture of the space…” and those challenges are only unveiled once the creative team is well into the design process. Listening to her describe her work in War Paint was like taking a master class on engineering. She was born in Bulgaria, studied in Europe, and eventually completed an MFA in costume design at Yale. She has over 85 shows under her belt, and in the year 2012 she had 13 different Broadway shows running with her makeup designs. Angelina is the makeup designer for War Paint, and just like Helena and Elizabeth, she knows how to run a business. “I think our industry is heading in a very positive direction as far as getting a more diverse group of people on all sides of the table - as writers, directors, designers, actors, and so forth.” While there may not be as many women occupying roles on creative teams, Jennifer champions that “it takes time and the perseverance of individuals to make a significant change - this is the time for the theatre, and we are the individuals.”Īngelina Avallone is one of those individuals. I chatted with Jennifer about the impact of this show and the role women are playing off-stage in the industry. I would've also loved seeing an original musical with a new score!” “It would've impacted me greatly to learn about real women who defied what was expected of them at the time regarding gender roles, and became leaders in their industry. The modern mogul found time between rehearsals for a show she was producing, a trip to speak on panels for young artists at a theater convention, and research for her next book to chime in on what she thought her teenage self would think. “Teenage me would have been thrilled at the idea of watching a musical about people who actually lived, portrayed by such legends,“ says Jennifer, who has been an author, producer, historian, and all-around Broadway girl boss (#BroadwayGirlBoss) since her early teens. As I drafted a text in my mind I could almost hear the sweet belt of Patti LuPone yelling at me. After, I immediately dialed one of Broadway’s brilliant business minds, Jennifer Ashley Tepper, to debrief. Since the show hasn’t opened yet, we can’t divulge the juicy details, but during a preview I was lucky enough to witness several powerful and political lines incite the audience into show-stopping applause through which the actresses held their poise like marbled goddesses of progress.and somewhere in the orchestra section my little gay heart exploded. The show’s powerhouse creative team set their sights on these subjects after the success of their previous musical, Grey Gardens. War Paint stars Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole as Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, respectively.
